The nomination of Christine Varney was sent to the Senate for a confirmation vote after a Judiciary Committee approved her nomination as a chief antitrust enforcer at the Departmenf of Justice.
While testifying before the Senate panel, she promised vigorous antitrust enforcement and improve the cooperation between DOJ and FTC. She also seemed to be dissapointed the less restrictive merger control during the Bush presidency.
Christine Varney served as a Federal Trade Commissioner from 1994 to 1997. She was a leading official on a wide variety of Internet issues. She also pioneered the application of innovation market theory analysis to transactions in both electronic high technology and biotechnology.
Prior to becoming a Federal Trade Commissioner, she was an Assistant to the President and Secretary to the Cabinet.
Before joining the Clinton Administration, she practiced law with Hogan & Hartson. In addition, she served as Chief Counsel to the Clinton/Gore Campaign, General Counsel to the 1992 Presidential Inaugural Committee, and General Counsel to the Democratic National Committee from 1989 to 1992.
Now, she is a partner at Hogan & Hartson.
